THOMAS TUCHEL has revealed he is hopeful of adding Chelsea’s Anthony Barry to his staff at Bayern Munich.
The German, who was appointed following the surprise sacking of Julian Nagelsmann earlier this week, worked with Barry during his 20 months in charge of Chelsea.
The 36-year-old is one of the hottest properties in English coaching and is highly regarded by managers including Tuchel, Frank Lampard and Roberto Martinez. Barry joined Chelsea as first-team coach in August 2020, having impressed then-manager Lampard during their time together on the Football Association's Pro Licence course.
Liverpool-born Barry had produced a detailed thesis on throw-ins that impressed both his tutors and fellow students. When Lampard was sacked, Barry had the opportunity to become manager of Fleetwood Town, but opted instead to remain at Chelsea under Tuchel and then Graham Potter.
He has been described as a “set piece master” and has forged strong relationships with Chelsea's players and staff. Barry also works with the Portugal national team, alongside Martinez, with whom he worked for Belgium
Tuchel has already brought long-time assistants Arno Michels and Zsolt Low with him to Bayern but wants to add Barry too.
“The timing was surprising - I didn't expect it and there was no contact beforehand,” Tuchel said of his appointment. “I assumed that I would continue my career abroad.
"The first interview was on Tuesday evening. The size of the challenge was the deciding factor. My coaching staff wasn't prepared either, so a big thank you to their families for their flexibility. Arno Michels and Zsolt Low, who have been working with me for over ten years, will be there.
"We're hoping to add Anthony Barry, who is currently at Chelsea."
