Wigan's Barry appointed first-team coach at Chelsea

ANTHONY BARRY has been appointed first-team coach at Chelsea after three years with Wigan Athletic.
The former Everton trainee held the same role with the Latics and was highly regarded by manager Paul Cook and his staff. He played a key role in the team’s strong second half of the season, which included a club record 8-0 win over Hull City in July, but the club were relegated to League One because of a 12-point deduction for going into administration.
The 34-year-old knows Blues boss Frank Lampard well after being on the same Pro Licence course, held by the Football Association.
“I’m delighted to welcome Anthony to the club," said Lampard. “He’s an exciting young coach and someone I’ve known for a while. I believe he will be a strong addition to the team.”
Barry will slot in alongside Jody Morris, Joe Edwards and Chris Jones in Lampard’s coaching team. He replaces Eddie Newton, who left to join Turkish Trabzonspor in January 2020 after seven years with the Blues.
