FORMER Scotland captain Gary Caldwell has been appointed Loans Coach at Manchester City after his interim spell as Newcastle United’s Under-23s boss ended.

The ex-Wigan, Chesterfield and Partick Thistle manager joined the Magpies on a short-term basis last month while an external recruitment process took place to find a permanent replacement for Chris Hogg. That appointment has not yet been made.

Caldwell, who was an Academy player at Newcastle between 1997 and 2001, last week tweeted: “Enjoyed immensely being back on the grass coaching at the club that gave me my start in football. Thank you to all the players and staff for making me feel so welcome.”

Joleon Lescott, who had been City’s Loans Manager for the last four years, has now left the club to become assistant (along with Ashley Cole) to Lee Carsley with England U21s.

Gareth Whalley is City’s other Loans Coach - a role he has held for a decade.
