FORMER Wigan manager Gary Caldwell has been appointed interim Under-23s boss at Newcastle United following Chris Hogg's exit to join MK Dons.

Caldwell, who came through the Magpies' Academy set-up between 1997 and 2001, will re-join the club on a short-term basis while an external recruitment process takes place to appoint Hogg’s full-time successor.

Hogg left the club last week after 18 months to become assistant to Liam Manning at MK Dons.

He said: "Me and Liam were in the same youth team at Ipswich - although that was some time ago now.

“We share the same vision and belief in how we want to do things, on and off the pitch, and he is somebody I am excited to work with. I spent a lot of time watching MK Dons last season as an outsider – this is a young and exciting squad, full of players with real potential."

Former Scotland captain Caldwell managed Chesterfield and Partick Thistle after leaving Wigan in October 2016.
