WALSALL have appointed Crystal Palace Head of Emerging Talent Jamie Fullarton as their new Technical Director.

The 46-year-old, who has worked for Palace since October 2019, will provide "strategic direction, oversight and management of the Football Department” and also take a place on the Board of the League Two club.

With admirable honesty, Chairman Leigh Pomlett admitted: “It strikes me that we sit on the Board of a football club but no-one knows about football.

“That link between the Board and playing staff will be extremely important. Managers come, managers go; Technical Directors, hopefully, do not. It is all about improving the football standards across the whole football club. You will see a different sort of Walsall going forward.”

Fullarton, who has been a manager, at Halifax Town and Notts County, and an Under-23 coach, at Bolton, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, added: “I am thoroughly delighted to be part of the club moving forward in the Technical Director’s role, which is becoming very popular and essential for football clubs.

“I think first and foremost the role is to create continuity and consistency for the club within an industry that is very volatile. Ultimately, I am there to provide support for the Head Coach to help him and the team be successful short term, whilst helping the club build an infrastructure that enables continued success and provides alignment throughout the football department.

“I am excited by the opportunity and really looking forward to working with everyone to fulfil the potential this football club clearly has.”

Fullarton is the second senior member of Palace’s recruitment and scouting staff to have left recently, with Recruitment Manager Omar Yabroudi having departed the club last week.

Walsall had advertised the Technical Director vacancy and Pomlett said they had received more than 100 applications, which had taken him "just under 20 hours" to sift through.
