FLEETWOOD TOWN Sporting Director Gretar Steinsson has left the club after four years to become Chief European Scout at Everton.

The former Iceland international, who played in the Premier League for Bolton from 2008 to 2012, has been with League One Fleetwood since January 2015.

He worked his last day for the Lancashire club yesterday and his appointment by Everton will be officially announced tomorrow.

The 36-year-old, who is multi-lingual, knows Everton Director of Football Marcel Brands following two seasons playing for AZ Alkmaar in Holland. Steinsson was a key member of Louis van Gaal’s title-winning AZ side, while Brands was Director of Football at the club.

Fleetwood do not plan to replace the Icelander, TGG understands. Manager Joey Barton has already been heavily involved with recruitment since his arrival in the summer, while chief executive Steve Curwood will have ultimate responsibility for both the business and elite football aspects of the club.
