GIANLUCA NANI has returned to Watford as Sporting Director, replacing Cristiano Giaretta.

Nani held the same role with the Hornets from 2012 to 2015, having moved to the club with Chairman Scott Duxbury from West Ham.

The Italian has also been Sporting Director at Brescia, Al Jazira and Reading. Giaretta, whose position has been the subject of speculation for some time, is leaving “to pursue a new opportunity”, Watford said.

The 55-year-old joined in August 2020 from Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia, where he had worked since February 2019, and had worked for Watford owners the Pozzo family at their other club, Udinese.

In a statement, Watford thanked Giaretta for his “dedication and professionalism”.

Giaretta added: “I would like to personally thank Gino Pozzo for the incredible opportunity I've had here and to Scott Duxbury for his vital daily support. Thanks also to Valérien Ismaël, all the players and staff and all the people at the training ground with whom joys and sorrows have been shared over recent years; they are an amazing group.

“I hope the supporters can see their colours in the Premier League again. I wish them the best. Never give up, that's for sure!”

Technical Director Ben Manga left the club after less than a year in October.
