ANDY MYERS has left Chelsea after 13 years to become Joe Edwards’ Assistant at Millwall.
Myers made more than 100 appearances for the Blues as a player and first joined their Academy coaching staff as part-time Under-14s Assistant in 2010/11.
His first full-time role was as U15s Lead and he went on to become Development Squad (U23s) Assistant to Edwards, Assistant Manager at sister club Vitesse Arnhem, U18s Lead, U21s Lead and, since the summer of 2022, Technical Loan Coach.
Edwards was a schoolboy player with the Blues before being released at the age of 16. His coaching career started with the youngest players at the Academy in 2004 and he took charge of the U18s for a two-year spell from 2014/15, during which time they won back-to-back FA Youth Cups.
After that he was promoted to Lead Coach of the Development Squad, guiding them to the semi-finals of the senior Checkatrade Trophy - the furthest any Academy side has got in the competition.
The U19s also finished as runners-up in the UEFA Youth League in successive seasons. Edwards was appointed Chelsea Assistant under Frank Lampard in the summer of 2019 and remained under Thomas Tuchel, forming part of the staff that won the Champions League.
He joined Lampard at Everton and Chelsea and was appointed England U20s Lead earlier this summer - a role he will now relinquish.
Adam Barrett, who has overseen Millwall's last four matches on a caretaker basis, will remain as Assistant under Edwards. Goalkeeper Coach Andy Marshall will stay on too.
Edwards said: "Firstly, it's a really proud day for me and my family. Although I have been coaching for a long time, a lot of people will be aware that this is my first job managing as Head Coach.
"Throughout the years, at various levels, you think you would like to have the opportunity to make the step up. To do it at a club like this, to be Head Coach of Millwall Football Club - I don't take that lightly at all. I'm really excited."
Alex Aldridge, Director of Football Operations and Recruitment, added: “Joe has strong principles and clear ideas for taking the team forwards and given his background in developing young players fully understands the importance of having a strong link with our Academy.”
