RAY LEWINGTON will end a “long and distinguished association” with Crystal Palace when he departs along with manager Roy Hodgson at the end of the season.
Yesterday Hodgson announced he was leaving Selhurst Park after four seasons and 162 matches in charge. His long-time assistant, Lewington, with whom he also worked for Fulham and England, will be leaving as well.
Palace chairman Steve Parish tweeted: “A huge thank you also to Ray Lewington - his long and distinguished association with the club is further enhanced by the latest period with us. Not only is he a superb coach his eternal positivity and patience (especially with my questions) will be greatly missed.”
The 64-year-old was a coach and assistant manager at Palace from 1994 to 1998, before leaving for Brentford with owner Ron Noades.
He managed both the Bees and Watford before becoming assistant to Hodgson at Fulham in 2007. After that the duo worked for England and now Palace.
Their relationship goes back much further than that though, all the way to 1974, with Lewington revealing: “Roy actually took me for my preliminary coaching badge when I was 18 and thankfully he passed me at that stage.”
