WATFORD goalkeeper coach Alex Chamberlain is leaving the club after 21 years.

The news led former Hornets Academy manager Nick Cox, now Manchester United’s Academy Operations Manager, to tweet “The club has finally given up the last piece of its soul...the price of success?”

Chamberlain has had more than 21 years’ unbroken service at the club - 11 as a player and then 10 as goalkeeper coach for the first-team and Academy. Hugo Oliveira has been first-team keeper coach since arriving with manager Marco Silva in the summer.

“Alec’s contribution to this club is significant and will remain undiminished by the passing of time,” said Watford chairman and CEO Scott Duxbury.

“I first met him as the club’s goalkeeper coach, but it was clear the esteem he was held in by supporters and staff alike. That’s testament to the contributions he has made to this club over a very long period of time.

“I’m sure Alec will be successful in whatever he chooses to do next and we wish him all the very best for the future. He’ll always be a very welcome visitor here at Vicarage Road.”

Chamberlain joined Watford from Sunderland in the summer of 1996 and went on to make 289 appearances, winning two Player of the Season awards. He is currently working with the Wales Under-21s and looking for other opportunities in football.

Cox was at Watford for eight years before moving to Sheffield United and then Manchester United in May last year.
