Newcastle hire Arsenal's Black as new Academy Lead Scout

NEWCASTLE UNITED have hired Arsenal’s Edward Black as their new Academy Lead Scout.

Technical Director Dan Ashworth is intent on improving the Academy’s productivity and is currently leading an overhaul of their youth scouting and recruitment.

As TGG has previously reported, the Magpies have recently appointed Paul McLaren as their Head of National Youth Scouting (13s to 18s) and Paul Midgley as their Head of Youth Recruitment. Both had previously worked for Manchester City.

Delroy Ebanks will join from West Ham, where he was Head of Youth Recruitment, to become Academy Lead Scout for the South of England, while Paul Baker, who has been with Newcastle since 2016, will be Academy Lead Scout for the North.

Newcastle have also moved to the same position-specific scouting model that Ashworth used in his previous role at Brighton, with the club advertising for Positional Analysts and a Lead Video Analyst.

Black has been Arsenal’s North of England and Scotland Emerging Talent Scout since June 2022. Prior to this he worked for Norwich City for three years as their first-team scout for the North East and Scotland.

Black is a Newcastle United supporter and lives in the city. The Magpies are about to announce several more scouting and recruitment appointments in the coming weeks.

They have advertised for seven new international scouts, a Head of Emerging Talent and a Recruitment Operations Manager.
