JON WALTERS has stepped down as Technical Director of Fleetwood Town and Waterford FC after six months.
The former Republic of Ireland forward was appointed by both clubs - which are owned by Andy Pilley - in December last year. He had previously been Senior Men’s Scout and Under-19s Assistant for the Football Association of Ireland.
At the time of the appointment, Pilley said: “Jonathan is an experienced and knowledgeable character who can help the club move to the next level in structure, recruitment and sporting success on the pitch.”
However, today Walters announced he was stepping down following Fleetwood’s final game of the season - a 2-2 draw against promoted Ipswich that left them 13th in the table.
“As we come to the end of the EFL season, I feel the time is right to step down from my role as Technical Director of Fleetwood Town and Waterford FC,” he wrote on Instagram.
“Together, with the support of many great people, we have strengthened the Fleetwood Town squad, comfortably secured League One states and made history by taking the club to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
“With Waterford, I was delighted to help implement some new structures and bring in two fantastic people in Keith Long and Alan Reynolds, whom I have no doubt will bring success back to the club.
“I would like to thank the owner Andy Pilley for the opportunity to take up this unique role at both clubs. The experiences gained will undoubtedly help me to continue to develop and progress into my next role.
“I wish both clubs and their fantastic supporters every success for the future.”
Fleetwood were one of the first League One clubs to appoint a Technical Director in Gretar Steinsson, who was with them from January 2015 to Decemver 2018. Walters won 54 caps for the Republic of Ireland, scoring 14 goals.
