STOKE CITY Technical Director Mark Cartwright is leaving the club after seven years to pursue “a different challenge”.

The former goalkeeper, who was appointed in December 2012, had been a controversial figure in recent seasons. He was ultimately responsible for transfers and following Stoke’s relegation from the Premier League in May 2018, goalkeeper Jack Butland - Cartwright’s first signing for the club - said: “I think the whole recruitment process needs looking at, to be honest.

“There’s been transfers who aren’t even part of the squad for all kinds of reasons, whether it be discipline, whether it be lack of performance. So you’ve got to look at that – what decisions are being made and the type of characters.

“Too many of the recent investments have been completely unused and that’s unacceptable. For any changes to happen that’s got to be looked at, because it’s been farcical.”

Cartwright officially leaves the Potters on September 13th. He said: “It has been an enormous privilege to have worked for such a fantastic football club. I’ve worked alongside some wonderful people and I can’t thank them enough for the support they have given me.

“I have decided to leave. It’s not a decision that I have taken lightly as I have had some wonderful times and enjoyed a lot of success at the club. However, I am now ready for a different challenge and I’m excited about the future and exploring new opportunities within football.”

Chief executive Tony Scholes added: “We are disappointed that Mark has decided to leave us but can understand he feels the need for a fresh challenge. He has worked tirelessly behind the scenes for seven years and in addition to many other matters has been instrumental in helping to bring some magnificent players to the Club.

“I would like to wish Mark every success for the future. He will always be welcome at the bet365 Stadium and Clayton Wood.”

Manager Nathan Jones said: “I have known Mark for many years and when I arrived at the Club was not surprised at the level of professionalism that he brought to his role and the high regard that everyone at the Club has for him. I am disappointed that he is leaving but fully understand the decision that he has made.”
