AN emotional Steve Evans has paid tribute to the ‘outstanding’ Matt Salmon following the Mansfield Town physio’s untimely death at the age of 25.
Salmon passed away peacefully yesterday, surrounded by his family. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2010 and retired on Wednesday, having been given only a short time to live in a recent consultation.
Salmon explained: “I have reached a stage where I am not able to give our players the level of care they deserve.”
He had been at the club for three and a half years, mainly as academy physio, but also working with the first team for a short time.
Mansfield Town manager Evans told TGG: “Matt was outstanding at his job - as good as anyone I could have wished to work with.
"He was also an outstanding person and was bound to go on to achieve great things in the world of physiotherapy within football.
"Matt was outstanding at his job - and as a person" Steve Evans
“Yesterday, when we found out the news, was as sad a day as there can be. I, like many others, just sat down and cried.
“My thoughts and prayers go to his young wife and family. May God give them strength as this time - and in the days and months that lie ahead. He has no right to be taken from his wife and family at such a young age.”
