Premier League 2 becomes Under-21 competition

PREMIER LEAGUE 2 will change to an Under-21 competition from next season.
PL2 has been for U23s since the start of the 2016/17 season, but the Premier League said the rule change would “reflect the reality of the players in the competition”, whose average age is 19.
Clubs will, however, be permitted to use five (previously three) over-age outfield players and one over-age goalkeeper, “in order to transition from its U23 format.”
This will provide “opportunities for the best young players to play alongside and against older and more experienced players.”
The change is part of a “wider review of the Professional Development Phase Games Programme which will continue through the season.”
