EDDIE NEWTON has left Chelsea after seven years to become assistant manager at Turkish side Trabzonspor.
The former Blues midfielder was appointed as one of Frank Lampard’s assistants at Stamford Bridge last summer, having previously been loans technical coach for three years.
Now he has decided to work abroad for the first time and took part in training at Trabzonspor alongside manager Hüseyin Çim?ir this week.
There were two familiar faces there for Newton, as former Chelsea players Jon Obi Mikel and Daniel Sturridge are part of the Turkish team’s squad.
Newton joined Chelsea as a 13-year-old and came through the ranks to make 214 appearances, including in the 1997 FA Cup final, when he scored his side’s second goal in a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough.
At the end of his playing career, he returned to Chelsea to work in their Academy, before working alongside Roberto Di Matteo at MK Dons and West Brom.
In November 2012, he rejoined Chelsea’s Academy and in stints as Di Matteo’s and then Guus Hiddink’s assistant, he won the FA Cup and Champions League.
From 2016 to 2019 he was loan player technical coach. Trabzonspor are currently fourth in the Turkish Super Lig and take on Fenerbahçe on Saturday.
ADD (Saturday February 1st): Chelsea confirmed the news and said: "We would like to thank Eddie for his dedicated service to the club and wish him the best of luck with this exciting new venture. He’ll always be welcome back at Stamford Bridge."
