JOE SHIELDS has departed Manchester City after nine years to become Head of Senior Recruitment at Southampton.

The 35-year-old replaces Martyn Glover, who has joined Leicester City as Head of Recruitment after almost three-and-a-half years at St Mary’s as their Head of Scouting and Recruitment.

Glover has replaced Lee Congerton at Leicester. Congerton left the Foxes after three years to become Head of Senior Recruitment at Atalanta in Serie A.

Shields was Assistant Head of Youth Recruitment at Crystal Palace before joining City in July 2013. He has been the club’s Head of Academy Recruitment and Talent Management for the last four years.

Southampton are heavily focused on development and said Shields “arrives with an excellent reputation for identifying young talent.”

There have been other changes in Southampton’s scouting and recruitment department. Sam Stanton, who arrived in January 2021 as Player Insights Lead, has been appointed Lead Scout for the South of the UK.

Luke Coles, who worked with Stanton at Bristol City, has taken his former role of Player Insights Lead. Coles had worked at Sunderland as Lead Opposition Scout and Technical Recruitment Analyst for the previous 18 months.
