Man City coach takes on incredible double challenge for charity

MANCHESTER CITY Under-14 lead Jamie Carr will embark on an incredible double challenge in two of the world's most hostile environments next year to raise money for charity.
The coach, who has worked for City since July 2018, will begin his Nothing Ventured Campaign by competing in March's Marathon des Sables, known as the toughest foot race on earth.
The six-day ultra-marathon is run over 156 miles in the Sahara Desert, with temperatures regularly reaching 50°C during the day and plummeting to freezing at night.
Then, in December 2022, he will take on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge, which is considered the world’s toughest ocean row. Going solo, he will cover more than 3,000 miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean and battle sleep deprivation, salt sores and the physical demands of rowing up to 18 hours a day.
More people have travelled into space than rowed an ocean solo and Carr has no previous experience of the sport. Money raised will be equally split between the Cancer Fund for Children and City in the Community's City Thrive initiative.
“It’s been really important to me throughout my life to be a positive role model and give back where I can,” Carr said. “The Cancer Fund for Children is a therapeutic short break centre in Northern Ireland that helps children diagnosed with cancer.
“They are building a second facility in the Republic of Ireland and they are at the stage where they are raising funds to build that facility so they can help more children and their families.
“Fifty per cent of the funds raised will also be going to City in the Community and that’s going towards their new mental health project called City Thrive, designed to help the young people in Manchester to support them with mental health."
