Aaron Briggs: Joined Liverpool in July as First Team Individual Development Coach

Liverpool have put their search for a first Set Piece Coach on hold, with Aaron Briggs taking on the role since his arrival at the club in July.

In May, the Reds advertised for their very first specialist Set Piece Coach. The job advert asked for a UEFA A License coach or equivalent who was a “tactical specialist” and capable of conducting “thorough analysis and meticulous planning”, while having “the ability to expertly coach both offensive and defensive set-piece strategies.”

The successful applicant was to analyse set-piece performance data and “provide key metrics to the Sporting Director for use in board and strategy meetings.”

Previously, Assistant Peter Krawietz had taken the lead on set pieces under Jurgen Klopp.

Briggs, who arrived at Anfield in July, fitted the bill for a Set Piece Coach, even though his original title was First Team Individual Development Coach, replacing the outgoing Vitor Matos.

Briggs, a Pro Licence coach, has extensive experience of both coaching and analysis. He worked for Manchester City for nine years, progressing to become their Senior First Team Performance Analyst, and went on to be Tactical Analysis Coach, Assistant and Head of Methodology at AS Monaco in France. After that he was Assistant at Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

Brigg's link with Liverpool was through Pedro Marques, the club's new Director of Football Development, who was previously Global Lead for Football Performance for City Football Group during Briggs’ time there.

Liverpool's first two goals in the 3-1 Champions League win at AC Milan last night were from set pieces. Afterwards Head Coach Arne Slot said: “We hit the crossbar a few times from open play, so we needed set pieces and it was good to see that we scored them for all the work my Assistants and the players put in.”
