MARK LEYLAND, who has been described as an “integral” member of staff by Eddie Howe, is leaving Newcastle United at this end of the season to become Head of Coaching Methodology at City Football Group.
Leyland joined Newcastle from Liverpool as first-team coach/ analyst in December 2021 and last April Howe said: “He has had a big impact He's played a huge part in what we've done this season.
“He's one of a number of people behind the scenes that have put a tireless amount of work in to try and improve the team. We love him to bits and he's been an integral part of our team.”
Leyland’s remit at Newcastle is to work closely with Howe and his coaching staff to ensure analysis is impacting training and match preparation and reflection. He previously worked for Liverpool for eight-and-a-half years, latterly as Head of Post Match Analysis.
Before Liverpool’s match against Newcastle last April, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said: “They signed one of our analysts. For sure, he has played a big part as well.”
Howe already knew Leyland well before he arrived on Tyneside, as the duo had worked together at Burnley in 2012/13.
Leyland will take on a senior analysis role at City Football Group, working across their portfolio of clubs.
