EDDIE HOWE has confirmed that he has taken a quartet of his former Bournemouth staff with him to Newcastle United.
The 43-year-old today gave his first press conference as Magpies boss, having signed a contract with the club to the summer of 2024. The staff who will be joining him are assistants Jason Tindall and Stephen Purches, first-team coach Simon Weatherstone and Head of Sport Science Dan Hodges.
Assistant Graeme Jones, who joined the club in January this year under Steve Bruce, will remain, Howe said. TGG understands that Individual Development Coach Ben Dawson, who provides a bridge between the Academy and first team, will also stay on.
The fact that Howe has not brought in a goalkeeper coach would also suggest that long-standing coach Simon Smith will remain, although this has not been confirmed.
The futures of the rest of the remaining first-team staff are unknown. A Newcastle spokesman told TGG it was “too early to comment, because nothing has yet been confirmed.”
Stephen Clemence and Steve Agnew were assistants under Bruce, with Callum Walsh appointed Head of Sport Science in the summer after joining from Huddersfield.
INCOMING QUARTET:
Tindall was Howe’s assistant at Bournemouth from the time he became caretaker manager, in January 2009, to when he departed in May 2020 (including for a short spell at Burnley in 2011/12). Succeeded Howe as Cherries boss but lasted in post until only February 2021. Joined Paul Heckingbottom for a short spell as his assistant at Sheffield United.
Purches played for the Cherries for more than a decade during two stints and joined the club’s youth set-up as a coach in 2004. He progressed to become first-team coach and assistant to Howe. He left in June when Scott Parker was appointed manager.
Weatherstone was first-team coach at Bournemouth from June 2014 to June 2021 under Howe; and Hodges has left Bournemouth after almost a decade’s service to join his former boss at St James’ Park. He joined the Cherries in June 2012 from Rochdale.
