GOALKEEPING COACH Craig Mawson has left Burnley after almost a decade to join Manchester United.

The 40-year-old will work under senior coach Richard Hartis as assistant first-team goalkeeping coach.

He said: “It is such an honour to join Manchester United and to work with the fantastic set-up already in place. Burnley has been a huge part of my life and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time there, both as a player and as a coach.

“I would like to thank them for everything they have done for me and for the perfect grounding they have provided me with, but this was an opportunity that I couldn’t let pass.

“I am looking forward to working with Richard Hartis, the coaches, staff and players. This is an exciting time for the club and I am delighted to be part of that.”

Mawson, who came through the youth ranks at Burnley before playing non-league football with Morecambe, Hereford and Halifax Town, returned to the Clarets as Under-18s coach in September 2010.

He progressed to Head of Academy goalkeeping and then the first team, alongside goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer.

United have been short of a goalkeeper coach since Emilio Alvarez left the club after three years in September. The Spaniard had joined in 2016 and enjoyed a close relationship with number one keeper David De Gea, with whom he had worked at Atletico Madrid. Hartis was appointed senior goalkeeping coach at Old Trafford in June.
