Glasner brings quartet of Austrian assistants to Crystal Palace

NEW Head Coach Oliver Glasner has brought a quartet of Austrian assistants with him to Crystal Palace.
The 49-year-old succeeded Roy Hodgson as the Eagles boss this week. He had previously been manager of Eintracht Frankfurt for two years to the end of 2022/23, leading them to the 2022 Europa League title and the 2023 German Cup final.
His assistants at Palace are:
- Ronald Brunmayr: Won eight caps for Austria and was a former player of the year for them. Played alongside Glasner at SV Ried and Grazer AK. Managed FC Blau-Weiss Linz to the 2020/21 second-tier title in Austria, before joining Glasner’s coaching staff at Eintracht Frankfurt.
- Michael Angerschmid: Team-mate of Glasner’s during 14 years at SV Ried. Then served as his assistant at LASK, Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.
- Emanuel Pogatetz: Capped 61 times by Austria and also made 158 appearances for Middlesbrough. Assistant at LASK in 2020/21 and at SKN St. Pölten from June 2021 to October 2023. Then led Austria Vienna’s B Team, known as the ‘Young Violets’.
- Michael Berktold: The fitness coach served under Glasner at LASK and Wolfsburg. His most recent role was at Red Bull Salzburg.
They join the existing staff of:
- Paddy McCarthy: Irishman played more than 250 senior games as a player. Appointed Palace U18 Head Coach in 2016. Progressed to the U21s before joining the first-team staff under Hodgson.
- Dean Kiely: Appointed Goalkeeper Coach in January 2018. Was on Hodgson's staff at West Brom in 2011/12. Made 664 appearances for six clubs during a 21-year playing career.
Meanwhile, Hodgson’s long-time assistant Ray Lewington has left the club. The 67-year-old spent 10 seasons at Palace in total across three separate stints.
Chairman Steve Parish said: "Ray holds a prominent place in the heart of every Crystal Palace supporter. As well as his superb coaching, we will all miss Ray's infectious positivity, patience and enthusiasm - all of which he displayed every matchday from the sidelines.
"We would like to wish Ray all the very best for the future - he knows that he will always be welcome back at Selhurst Park."
