Sam Erith: Worked for Manchester City for 11 years before leaving in November 2022

Former Manchester City Head of Human Performance Sam Erith has joined Manchester United as Performance Director to the end of the season.

Erith worked for City for 11 years, first as their Head of Sport Science and then as Head of Human Performance, before joining Madison Square Garden Sports Corp in New York as Player Performance and Science Lead in November 2022.

MSG Sports Corp manages teams including the New York Knicks in the NBA. Erith was targeted by United Sporting Director Dan Ashworth and will report directly into him when he starts his new role at United on Monday.

Prior to joining City in September 2011, Erith was Head of Sports Science for Tottenham. Ed Leng has been Head of Physical Performance at United since March 2023, having initially joined from Melbourne City as Lead Sports Scientist.

Richard Hawkins has been with the club since 2008 and moved from Head of Human Performance to Director of Football Insights and Innovation in March 2023, when he was replaced by Leng. Hawkins is focused on research and United's physiology testing lab rather than match-day performance.
