FORMER Everton Director of Football Marcel Brands is returning to PSV Eindhoven as their Chief Executive Officer.

Brands, 59, will take up the role at the end of the season and it marks a return to the club he served as Director of Football from 2010 to 2018. During that time PSV won the Eredevisie twice, in 2014/15 and 2015/16.

His spell at Everton was far less successful, however, with league finishes of eighth (2018/19), 12th (2019/20) and 10th (last season). When he exited at the start of December, the Toffees were 16th in the Premier League.

All of this despite the fact that they were one of the top 10 biggest net spenders in Europe over the last 10 transfer windows. However, how much of this was down to Brands is open to conjecture, because owner Farhad Moshiri overruled him on some key decisions, including managerial appointments and player signings.

Brands will take over from Toon Gerbrands as CEO at PSV.

“I’ve obviously been reflecting a lot on my future in the world of football,” he said. “There is only one club in the Netherlands where I would like to work and that club is PSV.

“A strong foundation has been laid here and the club boasts a well-balanced team of directors. I liked the successful collaboration I had with John de Jong, the current Director of Football.

“I’ve been having some conversations with him about the way we will cooperate. I am looking forward to leading PSV to new successes, with him and the other members of the Board.”
