FITNESS COACH Cristian Fernandez has left Newcastle United after five years to join Everton.

The move reunites the Spaniard with Toffees manager Rafa Benitez, for whom he worked at St James’ Park for three years. Fernandez's exit marks the first backroom change under the new ownership at Newcastle.

Posting on Twitter, Fernandez said: “After more than five years, it’s time to say goodbye. I want to thank Newcastle United for giving me the opportunity to live great experiences, enjoy the amazing Toon, where we have felt like home, but above all for being able to meet so many good people and great professionals who helped me grow both personally and professionally.

“I wish you the best of luck in this exciting time for the club and for the city, and I hope to see you soon. Thank you very much! Howay the lads!”

Fernandez worked for Hull City under Steve Bruce from 2014 to 2016 before joining Newcastle as Rehab Fitness Coach under Benitez. He also worked under Bruce at St James’ Park once he took over from Benitez.

In the summer another Newcastle man, Head of Sports Science Jamie Harley, made the move to Everton to join Benitez. Fernandez’s first match for his new club was the 1-0 defeat by West Ham at Goodison Park on Sunday. Afterwards he posted a photo and the words: “New chapter new home - game v West Ham.”
