HEAD COACH Unai Emery has taken five of his long-time assistants with him to Arsenal - while first-team coach Jens Lehmann has exited the club after less than a year.

Emery will be joined by lieutenants Juan Carlos Carcedo (assistant head coach), Pablo Villanueva (first-team coach), Julen Masach (strength and conditioning), Javi Garcia (goalkeeper coach) and Victor Manas (data/ video analyst).

Steve Bould, who has been on the staff since 2012, has been retained as assistant.

After news of the changes was announced, Lehmann tweeted: “Dear #Arsenal Fans, I am sorry to leave the club after only one year again. It was a good experience working with the players as one of the assistant-coaches. But the attitude from our 2004-group is not needed there anymore.”

Chief executive Ivan Gazidis said: “Unai has a very strong and talented team and I'm delighted that they are joining us. I’m also pleased that Steve Bould, (goalkeeper coach) Sal Bibbo and (Head of Elite Performance) Darren Burgess will continue their work with us. As we go through this period of change, we need to retain some continuity, and they have an important role to play."

This final point was slightly misleading, as Bibbo and Burgess have only been at the club since last July.

As reported previously by TGG, first-team coaches Neil Banfield, Tony Colbert, Jens Lehmann, Gerry Peyton and Boro Primorac have all been sacked, as well as Head of Medical Services Colin Lewin and physiotherapists Andy Rolls and Ben Ashworth.

Furthermore, osteopath Dr Philippe Boixel and Travel Manager Paul Johnson have been shown the exit door.

Gazidis added: “All these people have played a huge part in the club’s success and development over many years. We thank them for all their hard work and wish them all the best for the future.”

The level of staffing change at Arsenal is unprecedented in such a short period of time.

In the last 12 months, the Gunners have undergone an epic restructuring. They have appointed new Heads of Recruitment, Elite Performance, Football Relations, Nutrition, Sport Science, Goalkeeping, Medical Services and Contract Negotiating.
