FIFTY-TWO of Huddersfield’s Academy players have now been signed by other clubs following the Terriers’ decision to close all teams below the Under-18s in September.

A further nine have been offered deals they are yet to sign. Five players have gone to Manchester United - England Under-15 defender Rocco Fregapane, at Under-16 level, plus four at Under-14, including the highly-rated Sam Murray.

Category 2 Barnsley are taking the most players, with five at Under-16s and six at Under-14s. A further five having been offered deals they are still considering. Huddersfield themselves have retained five players for their Under-18 squad.

Two of the Under-16s are venturing as far afield as Category 1 Norwich, where former Huddersfield Academy Manager Steve Weaver is now in charge. However, the vast majority have signed for clubs in the North.

The Terriers announced the decision to downgrade their Academy from Category 2 to Category 4 in September, closing all teams below the Under-18s.

Chairman Dean Hoyle said the Academy had been costing £23,000 a week to run, but had only produced one Premier League player since 1999 - Jon Stead.
