Manchester United Deputy Football Director Andy O’Boyle is to leave the club after two years as part of the ongoing restructure by INEOS.
The Northern Irishman, who is a lifelong United fan, joined the club in May 2022 to support former Football Director John Murtough “in driving the club’s football strategy across the first team, Academy and women’s team.”
However, following the arrival of Dan Ashworth as Sporting Director and Jason Wilcox as Technical Director in the last few months, it has been decided that the Deputy Football Director role is no longer required.
For his part, O’Boyle is eager to seek opportunities as a Sporting Director or Assistant. Prior to joining United, he was Head of Elite Performance for the Premier League and first-team fitness coach at Liverpool.
When Murtough left United in April, after 11 years, O’Boyle assisted in the transition period until Ashworth arrived in July. He also worked on upgrading United’s data science capabilities and the recent thesis for his UEFA Pro Licence was on the future of football analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence.
United employed 1,144 staff according to their latest set of accounts, for the three months to March 31st, and are looking to reduce their workforce by about a third.
