LEE CARSLEY has been named England Under-20s coach as the Football Association announced its coaching appointments for the 2020/21 season.

The 46-year-old former Republic of Ireland international has been assistant to Aidy Boothroyd with the U21s since August 2018.

As well as being U20s coach he will be lead for the Professional Development Phase (U18s to U20s) “responsible for leading their department’s service to the men’s pathway as a whole”.

Aaron Danks, who was previously Head of the now defunct Specialist Coaching department, has replaced Carsley as U21s assistant.

Elsewhere, the appointments are as reported by TGG two weeks ago and are listed below. Justin Cochrane has moved up from the U16s to U17s and will lead the Youth Development Phase.

The coaching appointments were part of a “St George’s Park technical directorate restructure” which also led to the disbandment of the specialist coaching system and the end of funding for England’s elite futsal teams.

The Elite Coach Placement Programme, launched in October 2018 and run in tandem with the PFA, will continue.

FA Technical Director Les Reed said: “We are looking forward in full recognition of the challenging times facing all sports, not just football.

"The aim is to identify our competitive advantages and turn them into opportunities for us to win. Our age-group coaches are raring to get out on the grass once again and continue the progress of recent years.

“We've made great strides during the last four years and have put firm foundations in place. Our core England principles remain but they will continue to be reviewed as part of our ongoing evolution to meet the changing demands of winning international football and educating coaches.

“We have an opportunity to emerge stronger and be even more effective in the years to come."

FA Education also announced a new four-year strategy, with a shift towards digital resources and an “enhanced offering that can suit any individual needs”, although no specific details were provided.
