MICHAEL CARRICK will become a first-team coach at Manchester United at the end of the season, according to manager Jose Mourinho.

Carrick, who has won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during his 12 years at Old Trafford, will retire from playing at the end of the season.

When asked whether the midfielder had taken up his offer of a coaching role, Mourinho said: “Yes.”

He added: "The club would be very happy for him to do that. I would be very happy also for him to do that. I expect him to join.”

The 36-year-old has not played since experiencing an irregular heart rhythm in September, but he began training again in November following treatment. Carrick has been working towards his Uefa A Licence and coaching with the club’s Academy.

Last season he said: “It’s something I enjoy. It’s just trying to pass something on, some experience that I’ve had over the years, what I was like in their situation and things like that.

“Obviously, I’m using it to go for my badges as well and go for my A-Licence, so it’s worked quite well."

In November, Mourinho explained why he wanted the player to join his coaching staff.

"Michael, as a person, is more important than Michael as a player," he said. "We gave him the time to relax, to recover, to feel confident, to make the decision [when he] wants to play, [when he] wants to stop.

"He knows that my coaching staff has the chair for him if he wants. When he wants the chair, it is there in the office for him. I want that, the board wants that and the owner wants that. So Michael is in a comfortable situation. His future will be with us.”
