NATIONAL League North side AFC Fylde have advertised for a General Manager and specified: “Don't apply if you are looking for ‘a work life balance’ or have to pick the kids up from school twice a week at 3.30.”

The Lancashire club are advertising for both a General Manager and Director of Football to replace their outgoing Chief Executive Jonty Castle, who has resigned from his role after 20 months.

Both roles will report into chairman David Haythornthwaite, who formulated the wording of the job ads, TGG understands. The Director of Football will be “required to live within a one hour driving distance of the ground” and the job ad states: “If you can’t or aren’t prepared to do this then please do not apply. Compromise is not in our vocabulary.”

TGG has contacted both the club and Haythornthwaite’s Tangerine Holdings for a comment, but no response has been forthcoming.

There is currently no statutory right to flexible working, although the law does state that those who have been employed by a company for 26 weeks or more have the right to ask to work flexibly and that “your employer has a duty to consider your request seriously.”

The law adds: “Your employer should only turn you down for a statutory business reason, and should reach a decision within three months of your request.”

However, a Flexible Working Bill was introduced to Parliament in June this year and, if passed, would require employers to offer flexible working in contracts from day one, and to advertise vacancies as suitable for flexible working unless certain conditions are met.

The Bill would require employers to include in job advertisements what flexibility is available as well as offer flexible working arrangements in employment contracts.
