NEWCASTLE UNITED have renewed their contract with Irish sports science company Orreco.

The Magpies are long-standing clients of the firm, which uses sports science, data science and machine learning to monitor athletes and give advance warning of illness and injury.

Using Orreco's information, athletes are able to personalise their training and recovery with factors such as the best sleep patterns, diet and training load.

Orreco CEO Dr Brian Moore said: “It is exciting to have signed the contract renewal deals because they show that we are adding value for our clients. Right now, our technology is for use by elite athletes but our ultimate aim is to build the world’s first artificial intelligence coach that will be available to everyone. It will essentially be an Olympic coach in your pocket.”

In September 2015, Orreco announced a partnership with computer giant IBM to incorporate artificial intelligence into their applications. And earlier this year the company introduced its first consumer product, FitrWoman, which is an app designed to tailor exercise and nutrition recommendations to a user’s menstrual cycle.

Dr Paul Catterson, Head of Medical Services at Newcastle, has previously said: "Orreco provides us with rapid, reliable results. Monitoring the biomarkers of our squad gives us added information about how each individual is responding to both the training and match load."

Orreco’s client list includes 35 Olympic medallists, NBA and MLB teams, and golfers Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell, who are also investors in the company.
